Certain
diseases like severe cases of fibroids or uterine disorders in women
demands uterus removal for achieving complete cure. Uterus is removed
through a surgical procedure called hysterectomy. With the advent of
minimally invasive procedures in surgery, laparoscopic hysterectomy
has become popular.
Hysterectomy involves removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes along with the womb in some cases. If the patient is below the age 60 years, ovaries are not removed unless they are severely diseased. If hysterectomy does not involve ovary removal, the patient does not face mood swings or issues of hormonal imbalance. However, pregnancy and menstrual cycle are not possible after hysterectomy.

Laparoscopic
hysterectomy is carried out in cases where the patients face issues
like uterine fibroids with accelerated growth that would affect the
health of the patient, uterine prolapse, cancer affecting cervix,
uterus, endometrium or ovaries, abnormal and irregular menstrual
bleeding, endometriosis, conditions like adenomyosis and chronic
pelvic cramps.
Laparoscopic
Hysterectomy Procedure
Laparoscopic
hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove
uterus with the help of about 4 small incisions of 5mm each.
Performed after administering general anaesthesia, the incisions are
made on the abdominal area. The lighted laparoscope is inserted into
the abdominal cavity after filling it with carbon dioxide.
The
camera on laparoscope provides a clear image of the anatomy which
helps the surgeons to perform the surgery with ease. The uterus is
cut off from the blood supply and other organs to which it is
attached. Other issues, if any, are also taken care of. After the
removal, the carbon dioxide is drained of and incisions are closed.
Advantages
of laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Laparoscopic
hysterectomy is a basically safe technique with limited scarring or
bleeding. The post-operative pain associated with the procedure is
virtually nil. The procedure requires very less recovery time and
hence limited period of hospitalisation.
